Astralis: the four-Major dynasty and the roster that never changed

Astralis were formed in 2016 when a Danish roster left its previous organisation to run its own team, and within a year they had won a Major. Within three they had four, which is still more than any other organisation in Counter-Strike.

What makes them the most quizzable team in the game is stability: device, dupreeh, Xyp9x and gla1ve appear on all four winning line-ups, and only the fifth seat ever changed.

How they won

Astralis industrialised Counter-Strike. Under gla1ve they treated utility as a scripted resource — smokes, molotovs and flashes thrown on timings rehearsed to the second — and paired it with Xyp9x's late-round clutching and device's sniping. Opponents did not lose to individual brilliance so much as to a team that had already decided what the next thirty seconds would look like.

The approach spread. By 2020 nearly every top team had adopted structured default rounds and a dedicated support role, which is why the era after Astralis looks tactically nothing like the era before them.

After the core

device left for Ninjas in Pyjamas at the end of 2020, and dupreeh and Magisk followed to Team Vitality a year later — where they won another Major in 2023. Astralis rebuilt around younger Danish players and device eventually returned, but the dynasty roster never reassembled.

For quiz purposes the useful rule is simple: any Astralis line-up round from 2017 to 2019 is one of two answers, and the tell is whether Kjaerbye or Magisk is present.
